Navigating the Storm: The Call for Harmony in Igweship Selection in Nsukka

Navigating the Storm: The Call for Harmony in Igweship Selection in Nsukka

By: Ugwuoke Edmond

The complexities surrounding the selection of traditional rulers, or Igwes, have long been a source of strife and contention within our communities. In particular, the current situation in Umuoyo serves as a poignant example of a wider issue faced by many states in Nigeria whenever a new traditional leader is to be coronated. Too often, communities are left grappling with the protracted absence of a leader due to disputes over selection.

It is imperative to acknowledge that both Dr. Ejike Asadu and Professor Asogwa possess the qualifications and status to vie for the esteemed title of Igwe. However, I found myself perplexed and, like many others, concerned by Dr. Asadu's attempts to claim the throne without adhering to the customary processes that ensure fairness and legitimacy in such matters. His recent stance against Option A4 as an electoral means for selecting a traditional ruler, which is ostensibly progressive, raises questions about his motives. Does he fear rejection from the community, or is he leveraging his connections to destabilize our community?

Moreover, the Honorable Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Matters has displayed a troubling lack of discretion. Although there may be past tensions between him and Engr. Jude Asogwa, the current Local Government Chairman of Nsukka, it is disconcerting that the Commissioner chose to publicly address a matter that should have been handled privately, further complicating relations within the local leadership.

Engr. Jude Asogwa, supported by the Governor of Enugu State, has been entrusted with managing the affairs of our urban council. The Commissioner’s public grievance against him not only undermines Asogwa's authority but also disregards the fundamental respect due to the leadership structure established by the state. To threaten Asogwa with removal appears autocratic and fails to acknowledge the collective responsibility we share as leaders.

In times like these, it is crucial that the Honorable Commissioner exercises restraint rather than advocating for a candidate whose approach could further sow discord in our community. While we recognize Dr. Ejike Asadu's right to contest for the position of Igwe, it is vital that he respects the community's wishes and adheres to the established protocols rather than imposing his candidacy upon us.

In conclusion, I implore Hon. Ogbodo to reconsider his stance towards Engr. Jude Asogwa. From my perspective, Asogwa is a dedicated leader committed to bringing about positive change in our local government. Let us strive for unity and respect in this process, ensuring that we navigate these turbulent waters with wisdom and patience, fostering a community that thrives on collaboration rather than conflict.
