The Executive Chairman of the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB), Associate Professor Hyginus Banko Okibe, has pledged to elevate the Basic Education System in Enugu State through ongoing collaboration with the State Government and relevant agencies.

Professor Okibe made this commitment during a recent courtesy visit from members of the Enugu State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Science, and Technology. He emphasized that education is one of the most vital and revered sectors in the state.

He expressed gratitude for the State Governor, His Excellency Dr. Peter Mbah, noting his strong commitment to education, highlighted by initiatives such as the Smart Green School program and the allocation of 33% of the 2024 State budget to education.

Additionally, Professor Okibe announced that Governor Mbah has disbursed the 2024 counterpart fund/matching grant, enabling access to funds from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for educational development.

Reiterating the Board's alignment with the current administration's educational blueprint, Professor Okibe acknowledged pressing issues within basic education, such as improving literacy, numeracy, and writing competencies among pupils. He underscored that addressing these challenges is a top priority for the Board, aiming to revitalize the school system to ensure better outcomes and integrity.

He expressed appreciation to the visiting committee members for their interest in enhancing education through a collaborative partnership that fosters innovative ideas for progress.

As an accomplished educationist, Professor Okibe stated, "We are committed to implementing the State government's educational policies and programs, maintaining positive relationships with our staff, providing a conducive working environment, and enhancing their capacity for improved service delivery."

He highlighted the transformative impact of Governor Peter Mbah's Smart School initiative, which ensures that basic education is entirely free. He urged the community to take ownership of this program while criticizing the substandard work of some contractors involved in government projects, particularly the Smart Schools. He urged legislators to oversee ongoing projects within their constituencies and report any discrepancies for swift action.

During the visit, Hon. Osita Eze, the Committee Chairman and representative of the Oji River State constituency, congratulated Professor Okibe on his appointment and recounted the visit's purpose: to identify areas of need and challenges faced by the Board while integrating innovative policies that could revitalize public education in the state.

He reiterated the governor's deep commitment to education and promised that the Committee would provide necessary support to elevate the sector.

Vice Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Malachy Onyechi, praised Professor Okibe, asserting that his appointment by Governor Mbah was fitting given his impressive track record and qualifications. He expressed confidence in Okibe’s abilities to lead the Board to greater achievements.

Hon. Anthony Nwankwo, representing the Awgu South State constituency, thanked Professor Okibe for the warm reception and urged the Board to fulfill its mandate to enhance the standards of basic education in the state. He echoed the need for collaborative efforts from all stakeholders to meet the governor's expectations and improve educational outcomes for children.

Also present during the visit were Hon. Gabriel Eze from Isi Uzo State Constituency, Hon. Nwakaego Aja from ENSUBEB, various ENSUBEB directors, and Committee Clerk Perpetua Nwafor, among others.

This collaborative spirit marks a positive step toward achieving quality basic education in Enugu State, ensuring a brighter future for its children.
