NYGA Elections: Enugu Chapter of Nigerian Youths Congress Applauds Comr. Ugwu Fidelis Chukwudi’s Victory, Points Out Flaws in Previous Leadership, and Calls for Constitutional Integrity
The recently concluded election of the Nsukka Youths General Assembly (NYGA) has sparked reactions, as Comrade Nzeakor Cletus, also known as Tummy Blanka, the Chairman of the National Youth Congress (NYC) Enugu State Chapter, voiced his concerns.
Reflecting on the significance of youth organisations, Comrade Nzeakor emphasised the role of such groups as pressure mechanisms to ensure the government delivers democracy's dividends to the grassroots. He noted that these platforms allow young individuals to hone their political skills and demonstrate their leadership potential. However, he warned that failure to adhere to established processes could have long-term consequences for those involved.
Upon receiving an invitation to observe the NYGA election, Comrade Nzeakor initially had reservations about its organization. According to him, the election should have been handled by an electoral committee set up by the sitting president, in line with the association’s constitution. After reviewing the constitution, he observed several important guidelines:
The incumbent president must establish an electoral committee 90 days before the end of their tenure.
The electoral committee, which is a standing body within the association, should be led by a member of the Board of Trustees (BoT).
The inauguration of elected officials should occur on the same day as the election.
Comrade Nzeakor noted that these provisions are non-negotiable and should be strictly followed. He cited a previous election where the association had deviated from these rules, which prompted him to ensure this election adhered to the correct procedures.
To this end, Comrade Nzeakor sent a delegate to observe the October 2, 2024 election. According to the report, the process was transparent and peaceful, and the electoral umpire acted in line with the constitution by inaugurating the newly elected officials and issuing certificates of return. He commended the BoT for stepping in and praised the Executive Committee, led by Comrade Fidelis Chukwudi, on their victory.
Comrade Nzeakor then criticised the former President of NYGA, highlighting a constitutional breach that should have been avoided. He stressed the importance of constitutional integrity as the bedrock of a lawful society and democratic governance. He called on all members to abide by the constitution, warning that anyone who violates it must face the stipulated consequences.
Addressing the potential fallout from the election, Comrade Nzeakor advised any aggrieved parties to seek clarity within the association's constitution. He also cautioned politicians to refrain from meddling in youth association matters, noting that such interference often pits leaders against their communities and can lead to political downfall.
Finally, Comrade Nzeakor urged the newly elected President, Comrade Ugwu Fidelis Chukwudi, to work towards uniting the youths of Nsukka and fulfilling his campaign promises. He emphasised that gaining power is one thing, but using it effectively to serve the people is far more important.
The Chairman concluded by reaffirming his commitment to addressing issues that impact the youth of Enugu State and urged vigilance among all involved in the NYGA.
