Bello: Nigerians Shouldn't Expect Tinubu to Replicate Lagos Feats at Federal Level

Tunji Bello, the Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and a close associate of President Bola Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to manage their expectations regarding Tinubu's performance at the federal level.

Bello, who worked under Tinubu during his second term as Governor of Lagos State (2003–2007), pointed out that the President is grappling with “gargantuan problems” at the centre, which have so far hindered his ability to replicate the success he achieved in Lagos.

While speaking on Channels Television on Friday, September 6, Bello explained that Tinubu’s presidency is faced with unique challenges, such as infrastructural decay, insecurity, petrol issues, and labour unrest, all of which complicate governance at the national level.

“What I know is that he (Tinubu) is someone who always fights for the interest of Nigerians, just as he did in Lagos,” Bello said. “But Lagos and Nigeria are different. The challenges at the federal level are far more complex. There is Federal Character to consider, which wasn’t a factor in Lagos. He has to balance the interests of various regions and study what works.”

Bello maintained that despite these obstacles, the President has performed well, though there are still areas that need adjustment. He called for patience and a recalibration of expectations, noting that Tinubu’s current position comes with a new set of demands.
