Enugu State Government Cracks Down on Kidnapping: Properties to be Demolished

The Enugu State Government has issued a stern warning to property owners and criminal elements in the state, stating that properties used for kidnapping purposes will be demolished or forfeited to the state government in the coming days.

In a statement released by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, on Tuesday, the government emphasized its commitment to eradicating crime and criminality in the state. This move is a continuation of the Governor Peter Mbah Administration's determined effort to rid Enugu State of all forms of crimes.

Recall that the Enugu State House of Assembly amended the Criminal Code Law in November 2016, which was subsequently signed into law by the former governor, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, on 20th January 2017. Section 315 of the Criminal Code (Second Amendment) Law Cap. 30, Laws of Enugu State, states that buildings or structures used for kidnapping purposes will be demolished or forfeited to the state government.

Citizens have expressed frustration over the perceived delay in enforcing this law, but the current administration has reassured them that due diligence is being taken to avoid undue losses or miscarriage of justice. Property owners are urged to exercise caution when selecting tenants to avoid unwittingly harbouring criminal elements.

The government has now compiled a list of properties used for kidnapping and warns that these will be brought down soon, serving as a deterrent to others. "There is no hiding place for criminal elements in Enugu State. They either repent, leave town, or meet their Waterloo. The choice is theirs."
