Abia State Confirms First Monkeypox Case, Opens Treatment Centres




The Abia State Government has confirmed one positive case of monkeypox, amidst 13 suspected cases in the state. Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, made the announcement on Monday, August 19, revealing that nine cases tested negative, while three results are pending, with no fatalities recorded so far.


The lone confirmed case was reported in the Isiala Ngwa local government area. In response, the state has established treatment centres, including the Abia State University Teaching Hospital in Aba, with plans to announce additional centres soon.


Residents are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.
