Enugu State Cracks Down on Market Congestion: Motorists Hail Transport Ministry’s Bold Action

In a strong effort to restore order to Enugu State’s bustling roads, the Ministry of Transport has launched an extensive decongestion campaign targeting market zones across the state. Led by the Honourable Commissioner, Dr. Obi Ozor, this initiative seeks to alleviate the persistent traffic disruptions caused by traders encroaching onto roadways, aligning with the ministry’s ambitious vision of a world-class transportation network.

The decongestion drive comes as a direct response to long-standing grievances from motorists, who have repeatedly voiced concerns over the hazards posed by traders occupying sections of the road. The encroachments have led to numerous accidents, traffic jams, and altercations, prompting the ministry to take firm action.

On Thursday, a team of officials headed by Commander Kenneth Ugwu of the Enugu State Traffic Management Authority (ESTMA) conducted a major operation at the Holy Ghost axis and Mayor Market along Agbani Road. The team employed a firm yet courteous approach to clear the roads of obstructing traders, issuing stern warnings against future violations.

The ministry’s swift intervention has garnered widespread praise from key stakeholders, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Enugu branch. Executives from these unions commended the transport ministry’s proactive measures, highlighting the dangers previously posed by unchecked trader activities.

State Chairman of RTEAN, Mr. Chidiebere Aniagu, lauded the Honourable Commissioner and Commander Ugwu for their effective leadership, urging them to sustain these efforts, especially during peak traffic hours. He emphasized the importance of ongoing cooperation to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and the safety of all road users.

As the ministry ramps up its public awareness campaigns, defaulters are warned of strict consequences, including the confiscation of goods and potential legal action. Motorists are also reminded to adhere to traffic regulations, contributing to a safer and more orderly transportation environment.

The Enugu State Ministry of Transport remains steadfast in its commitment to developing a world-class transportation system. This decongestion initiative marks a significant milestone in that journey, with the ministry confident that through continued enforcement and collaboration, the roads of Enugu State will become safer, more efficient, and more pleasant for everyone.
