Enugu State Sets Strict Guidelines for New Schools and Health Centers, Urges Communities to Comply

Enugu State Sets Strict Guidelines for New Schools and Health Centers, Urges Communities to Comply

The Enugu State Government has reaffirmed its criteria for selecting locations for the new Smart Green Schools and Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centers across the state’s 260 electoral wards. The government emphasized that these projects will only proceed in communities that provide land meeting the outlined requirements, warning that non-compliance will result in the projects being halted.

In a statement released on Friday by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the government specified that the land allocated for these projects must be central, easily accessible, and devoid of any legal disputes. For the Smart Green Schools, the land must be large enough—specifically, three hectares for the school itself, staff quarters, and playground, with an additional one hectare for a school farm. If the land is not contiguous, any additional spaces must be within walking distance of the main site.

Prof. Onyia highlighted that the Type 2 Primary Health Centers would require only one hectare of land but must still adhere to the same conditions of centrality, accessibility, and legal clarity.

The government expressed concerns over some proposed locations being too far from the communities they are meant to serve, which could compromise the safety and security of both the schoolchildren and staff, as well as the facilities. The government made it clear that these projects must be situated in areas where local communities can easily take responsibility for ensuring their protection and maintenance.

Since 2023, the state government has awarded contracts for 127 Smart Green Schools, with an additional 133 recently approved, ensuring that each of the 260 electoral wards in Enugu State will host one of these educational institutions.

Communities are urged to comply with these guidelines to avoid delays in the commencement of these vital projects.
